First Aid is defined as emergency care for a victim of a sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. First Aid can prevent a victim's condition from worsening and provide relief from pain. First Aid must be administered as soon as possible.

In spite of the variety of injuries possible, several principles of First Aid still apply to all emergencies. One of these is to establish what dangers may still be present at the scene of the accident before beginning to provide First Aid. Another is to remain calm. Following this, you must then begin evaluating the condition of the victim and the severity of the injury in question.

To evaluate a victim's condition follow these three steps:

A Airway: is it open and unobstructed?
B Breathing: is the person breathing? Look, listen and feel for breathing.
C Circulation: is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.

Only after you determine the victim’s condition is it possible to administer First Aid.
